Proofreading. It sounds simple, but professional proofreading is one of the most critical, yet most often overlooked steps of polishing your story. Simply put, proofreading is a series of read-throughs with a focus on correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typos. A proofread manuscript can mean the difference between a handful of ugly one-star reviews on Amazon and an international best seller. Proofreading is useful for anything from novels, to an honors thesis, to something as small as business cards. Any words will do! Please note: proofreading is the last stage of editing before publication.
This is the real meat and potatoes of my job. I specialize in fiction manuscripts, but I will gladly take a look at non-fiction, poetry, or other creative writing. While I do enjoy an occasional episode of Grey's Anatomy or House, I do not work with medical or technical documents of any type.
Content editing, also known as developmental editing and substantive editing, comes in several different levels, but all of them delve far deeper into your story than proofreading. As your content editor, I will help you with the “flow” of your story. Depending on where you are in the various stages of creating a published book, you may need different varieties of content editing. I can help with everything from character development and making sure there are no plot holes to reworking the prose to ensure there is no confusion or redundancy. They say behind every great man is a great woman, but behind every great author is a great content editor!
Please note: Content editing is for content. While I will give you suggestions for how to format your manuscript, I do not do formatting for novels as that is not my specialty and every publisher has different standards for publication.
Beta-reading is for authors who are not yet ready for any type of substantive editing and simply want an opinion on their story. It is for those who are still trying to decide where the story should go, how a character should feel, and the overall tone of the story. I will read your document or manuscript and give you feedback on it, focusing on plot structure, character development, and any other ideas or issues you may have with the manuscript.
